Description

Objective: To examine the role of cannabis products in the treatment of alcohol use disorder. Methods: Systematic review using a comprehensive search strategy, 21 unique potential articles were identified and 5 ultimately met criteria for inclusion (3 regarding cannabis and 2 regarding cannabidiol). Results: In regards to cannabis, it was found that mid-level use was associated with worsened outcomes for individuals with AUD;however lighter or heavier use was not associated with any change in outcomes. In regards to CBD, it was found that it is well tolerated and does not interact with alcohol. It was also shown to decrease alcohol drinking in individuals with AUD and help protect against alcohol-induced liver and brain damage. Conclusion: CBD seems to have potential to be an effective new therapy for AUD due to its effects on the amount of alcohol consumed and its hepatoprotective and cardioprotective properties. Cannabis appears to be less promising as none of the studies found any positive outcomes with its use in the setting of AUD. More longitudinal studies with human subjects and formal clinical trials are necessary to recommend prescribing cannabis or CBD for the treatment of AUD.
