Description
The demand for surgical services continues to rise each year. This increased demand has led to a growing body of research aimed at improving patient recovery from surgery and minimizing complications. In 2000, the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) initiative was established to centralize this data. The term ERAS is now synonymous with a set of interventions that occur throughout the perioperative period to enhance patient outcomes. Institutions worldwide have initiated the evidence-based research presented in ERAS publications. Trends of decreased compliance with ERAS interventions have been observed following the implementation period. A literature review was conducted to identify strategies for enhancing compliance with the ERAS protocol. Of the strategies identified in the literature review, practitioner education resulted in the most significant increase in compliance. Following these findings, plans were developed to enhance ERAS compliance within a tertiary hospital.
