Description

Introduction: A post-dural puncture headache (PDPH) is a known complication that may occur following intended or unintended dural puncture. The obstetric (OB) population is at risk for the development of this complication, as they often receive neuraxial anesthesia for labor analgesia or cesarean deliveries. Post-dural puncture headaches may be debilitating for postpartum mothers, as they are healing from labor and caring for their newborn. A well-known treatment option for PDPH is the epidural blood patch. However, this treatment has its risks due to the invasiveness of the procedure. Conservative treatments should be considered for the management of PDPH, and the implementation of non-invasive techniques can enhance patient care and satisfaction during the postpartum period. This study aims to identify the current practices of OB anesthesiologists regarding treatment for PDPH, educate providers on conservative treatment options, and reduce the use of ineffective treatments. The overall goal is to improve patient care by increasing the utilization of evidence-based conservative treatments through a standardized approach.
