Description

Pursuing a doctoral degree in nurse anesthesia requires extensive academic and clinical proficiency, along with significant time, effort, and personal sacrifice. As more women enter graduate nursing programs, the intersection of career advancement and personal milestones, such as pregnancy, presents unique challenges to the student. For women who experience pregnancy during this training, the challenges become even more complex as they must learn to navigate not only the physical and emotional demands of pregnancy but also the inflexibility of the rigorous nature of their academia and clinical training. Although more women are pursuing science-based doctoral programs, a significant problem lies in the lack of research and support systems dedicated to addressing the distinct needs of residents who become pregnant, particularly concerning their success and well-being. This literature review aims to address gaps in the literature by examining how a social media platform that provides support, guidance, and community can positively influence the success and well-being of pregnant nurse anesthesia residents. Specifically, it explores the PICOT question “Among residents who experience pregnancy while enrolled in a doctoral clinical-based program, how does a social media support platform improve resident success and well-being compared to students who do not have access to a voluntary social media support platform throughout the program duration?”
